They were lucky. They were not forced to surrender to the Soviets.

So much for the master race. Thinking they were so superior is part of what caused them to lose the war.
The Germans raced into The Soviet Union in their summer uniforms. They expected to win the war in a few months. But The Battle of Stalingrad was fierce and vicious! One German soldier asked, "Are we fighting men or demons?"
The Germans also had supply problems. German trains could not run on Soviet railroads. And the brutal winter was very hard on them.
