U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today chaired a Senate hearing aimed at strengthening accountability in government by bolstering protections for contractor whistleblowers who raise the alarm on waste, fraud, and abuse of taxpayer dollars. Hundreds of thousands of non-federal employees—such as contractors, grantees, or state and local employees—work side-by-side with federal employees, and frequently are the first to know when federal dollars are being wasted or mismanaged. Since current law does not provide the same protections from reprisal to contractor whistleblowers as it offers to federal employees, contractor whistleblowers are less likely to lodge complaints when they witness waste or mismanagement.
