In 'Popcorn' from St John Ambulance, a girl starts choking in a popcorn advert, surprising a cinema audience. The film shows the importance of first aid and how accidents, like choking, can happen anywhere, at any time.

St John Ambulance say that every year, 150,000 people die in situations where first aid could have saved them. In many accidents, such as choking, effective first aid can often be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

We’re pleased the film is having an impact. There has been a lot of discussion about the correct first aid procedure for someone who is choking. SJA recommends that back blows should be given first, then abdominal thrusts if this is unsuccessful (known as the Heimlich manoeuvre in other countries).

Falmouth1966 - the child in the film is still conscious and is gasping for breath. If someone is unconscious and not breathing, the correct first aid is CPR. You can read about this on our website.

Isnt it a natural reaction to slap someone on the back when they are choking?

I saved a man's life last week by giving him the Heimlich. Back blows did absolutely nothing.

whilst some first aid skills may be 'obvious' it may be that when you are faced with a highly charged emotional situation such as this that you will wish you'd had the training - to give you confidence that you were doing the right thing.

The best employers are taining more of their people than they absolutely have to, so maybe one day more than 5% of people will be sure what to do when faced with an emergency like this.
