In Linda di Chamounix the mad scene (No! non è ver mentirono)is unlike its counterpart in Lucia, here we see Donizetti use a single movement in two-verse cabaletta form, and so functions as a true pendant to the father-daughter duet. (In the works of Donizettis final years such redistributions and occasional omissions of the sections of the conventional four-movement structure are increasingly common.) Yet, this often overlooked "mad scene" is more or less an integrated part of the drama rather than spectacle solo for soprano. Nonetheless, the music is haunting and deserves more attention.
