George Taliaferro, First African American Player Drafted into NFL

George Taliaferro is known as one of the best football players ever to attend Indiana University and that alone could make him an Indiana Legend. But the man who is the focus of WTIU's newest documentary is worthy of legendary status for much more than his gridiron skill.

Indiana Legends: George Taliaferro is the remarkable story of a man whose talent, courage and determination helped him smash racial barriers to become the first African American drafted by the National Football League.

The video didn't say that Mr. Taliaferro was the first black player in the NFL. He wasn't. But he was the first black man drafted by the NFL (1949). He didn't sign with the NFL, but with the AAFC, which then competed with the NFL. Another player from that draft, Wally Triplett of Penn State, was the first black draftee to play in an NFL game. The first two black players to sign contracts in the modern NFL were Kenny Washington and Woody Strode, who signed with the Rams in 1946.
