So we're watching a compressed quality video on Youtube of a poor VHS recording of a TV broadcast of a TMBG song being played on wax cylinder that's about poor audio recording quality.

The violin with the metal bell is called a Stroh violin. They came in different sizes, violas, cellos, etc. and were used for recordings as the early, non-electric recordings did not pick up the string instruments well. They were also used for outdoor performances.
