Eurovision 1971 - Portugal

Tonicha performing "Menina do Alto da Serra" ("High Ridge Girl"), the Portuguese entry at the 1971 Eurovision Song Contest.

Along with the Dutch entry, my other personal favorite from that year, a beautiful, lyrical song that is not unlike to what large part of Greek music sounded at the time (I've always thought that it could have easily been on, say, a Mariza Koch album). Apparently, the juries liked it too, since its 9th place marked the first time that the Portuguese found themselves in the top-10.

My favourite that year. Catchy, original, lovely... you can't stop listening to this. I can't believe it didn't reach TOP5. By the way- what is right title of this? I've always knew it just as "Menina".

I'm not totally sure on the title either, to say the truth. I've seen it listed both ways - diggiloo has this title, other sites indeed refer to it as just "Menina" - but I decided to go with the longer title, just to be sure :-)

Ao ouvir esta canção 50 anos depois não temos dúvidas que Portugal ganhou nesse ano. O facto de não estar na lista de vencedores é apenas um pormenor técnico. Não há dúvidas que Portugal ganhou em: 1969 (Desfolhada Portuguesa), 1971 (Menina do Alto da Serra), 1979 (Sobe, Sobe, Balão Sobe).
