UPDATE: The Ranger is fixed. Apparently the mechanic who installed the timing belt did not correctly adjust the crank shaft position sensor. It's all fixed now and runs like a champ. Thanks all for your ideas.

1992 Ford Ranger 2.3L 4 cylinder, manual. It threw the timing belt. Replaced it and the crank shaft censor but the thing stalls out and dies. It will start right back up and idle like a champ. I replaced the ICM, Relays, Coil packs, and it still dies. The fuel pump is good with good fuel pressure. The mechanic told me it wasn't a timing issue because there is no distributor to set the timing.
Any answers or tricks or pointers would be great.
Thanks.

  • Did you ever find out what the problem was with your Ford Ranger? Very interesting problem.

  • @moofushu Yeah. The crankshaft position sensor needed to be adjusted properly. It ran great until the transmission blew up a few weeks back. Cut my losses and donated the vehicle.

  • can you please explain how to adjust the sensor correctly? I know someone with the exact same problem. Thanks.

  • @polytechnickk Sorry but I don't really know...I just ended up taking it to a mechanic.

  • So did you fix the problem by adjusting your timming belt on the gear cogs?I have a similiar dilemma.

  • @pointinfinity I haven't got to it yet. I think I am taking it to another mechanic to fix. I will let you know....

  • i thought it would have been a flat spot on the crank shaft guess not

  • @roko914 PCM youre talking about?

  • @hom2fu that is what mine 99 3.0 ranger is going today now it will not start so u think it is Crank Angle Sensor

  • How did they adjust the crankshaft sensor. what's the adjustment procedure?

  • if shaft position sensor not doing it's job, the car will idle poorly, when the engine is hot, the car will not start, die on the freeway. in this case, it die by itself. i would say is one of the most important sensor. if you take your truck to a shop, they will say to replace everything just to make money.

  • i would say its a fuel filter thats what it was on my f-150 did the same thing

  • my mazda b2200 does the same thing it idles good but when youthrottle up it dies

  • Hey there, I have a 1990 ranger 2.3l I had similar problems only it was when going from a stop or idling that it would kill it I changed a whole bunch of things and the last two things would be the icm or the crankshaft sensor first I took the icm to get tested because it's easier to remove than the sensor. Turns out my icm is bad I hope it fixes it if not it's definitely the crankshaft sensor...sucks.
