Grande Rio bateria in the Sambodromo, 2011

Grande Rio's bateria enters the Sambodromo in the 2011 Carnaval of Rio de Janeiro. Check out the repinique/rainha solo at 3:30.

(Sorry for the moving camera - I was being pushed security guys, gently but relentlessly, the entire time. Sheer effin' luck I caught this at all - had literally just walked into the Sambodromo a second before, with a scalped ticket I bought on the street. I was only standing here because I hadn't found a seat yet.)

Basically the same advice holds everywhere, just keep your eyes open and don't carry flashy stuff (like, no fancy watches, leave your iphone at home, don't leave a large obvious backpack on the beach where someone might walk off w it). Don't worry too much, just go. The city's gotten safer recently btw, because of the Olympics & World Cup coming up they're putting a lot of effort into it.

Been to Rio 8 times, single older woman traveling alone, never a serious problem, got pickpocketed once. Lots of pickpockets at the Sambodromo & in the street parades but just use common sense - carry NOTHING that you care about losing to street parades, keep your eyes open, and (this is my #1 tip for guys) never ever ever put your Sambodromo ticket in your shorts pocket (hang it around your neck instead). Go, you won't regret it!
