NIU Steel band:
Steel pan solo composed and performed by Abe Breiling on the cello pan and accompanied by Scott McConnell on congas. The music is a theme-and-variation piece based on Lord Kitcheners tune "Rainorama." Both Abe Breiling and Scott McConnell are current graduate steel pan students earning their masters degrees at Northern Illinois University (NIU) in Dekalb, IL. They both have studied steel pan performance, improvisation, and composition under the direction of Liam Teague: assistant professor of music, head of steel pan studies, and co-director of the Northern Illinois (NIU) steel band.

The video was taken during a steel pan major rehearsal that we have every Friday in the NIU steel band room. This was the first time Abe Breiling and Scott McConnell performed Rainorama together for an audience. Im glad that they did it in the NIU steel band room so I could see it as well. The audience were all of the other steel pan majors at Northern Illinois University and play in the NIU Steelband as well.

Northern Illinois University (NIU) is one of the few institutions in the world at which students may pursue music degrees (Bachelors and Masters) with the steel pan as the major instrument of choice.
