More video of live chickens being sold in the San Francisco Civic Center Farmer's Market. They get stuffed in a bag, dropped on a table, and taken away to a long line of buyers. The entire area smells of chicken poop. The workers yell out to stop taking pictures.

  • These chickens are stuffed into small cages on the back of the truck, put into sacks and dropped on a low table behind the truck, and sold off to the public who is standing along side of the truck where there is a ton of chicken poop on the sidewalk. It smells foul and the scream of the chickens is unbearable.

  • Animal Care & Control Memo ID.: A263934 Date: 04/08/09

Multiple violations found: Overcrowding, direct sunlight, no water, plastic bags covering breathe holes, sick/injured bird (underweight with lg. open wound) set aside in bag - seized and euthanized, necropsy pending.

Violations of CA Penal code 597 and possibly health laws, but it's near impossible to get these laws enforced when farm animals are involved.

  • Thanks for posting this.

I just recently learned about this, and I'm an animal advocate and vegan. I understand that Action for Animals tried to stop live animal markets in the late 90s (using health code violations as the reasons) but the Asian community (who primarily run the live food markets) has a lot of pull in San Francisco politics. Of course, all cultures have "traditions" that are unethical, and can change.

I'm trying to find out what we can do - have you looked into at all?
