I can never be this good unless I am this sad and miserable. Oh to be so in touch with yourself at such a fragile state.

One of the deepest songs I've ever heard. LaMontagne catalogs the human experience: the insouciance of the young and affluent ("the young and pretty"), the tooth-and-nail struggle for subsistence ("the old and lonely"), the pettiness and spiritual penury of the self-aggrandizing ("the corporate man"), the banality of the 9-to-5 ("the working class"). And in the background is the threat of meaningless (the refrain of the sun turning black), and the old, eternal question: Who are we?
Beautiful.

What a great song

To me this song is about how we look outside of ourselves for fulfillment but you have to look inside. For as long as you look outside you will be unhappy.

I could see this song playing at the end of the Childhood's End book.

life is sad and i think it calls attention to the idea that we try to ignore that...

It doesn't capture loss you numpty!

I think this is the song I'd like played when they put me in the ground. Such a lovingly sweet testament to life and sadness. A tale to the living that the sun will also turn black for them as well.
In the end you will only have yourself to blame so don't be too hard. Forgive yourself before others. If you don't have faith then I do. I'll be your cheerleader.
