The last couple minutes of Gianni Schicchi. Patrizia Ciofi plays Lauretta, Roberto Sacca plays Rinuccio, and Alessandro Corbelli is Gianni Schicchi. Schicchi has just chased all the angry relatives out of Donati's house, now his house, and Rinuccio and Lauretta are free to marry. A nice and sweet ending to a charming little opera :-)

  • Personally, I've never seen an interesting production of Schicchi that WAS set in the 13th century. It translates just fine to other times, as do many, many other great operas. As long as the staging is true to the spirit of the opera and does no damage to the music, great operas can be staged in infinite ways, and each staging will illuminate a different truth about the work.

  • che belleza la musica di Puccini!!!

  • This is the Paris Opera production in Palais Garnier, isn't it ?

  • @dangerousmezzo It translates better than most to other times, yet even here we have the problem of era-specific references in the text (why would people in the 20th century fight over the right to inherit a mule?) which the audience can understand thanks to surtitles.

With other operas it's even worse, as the text simply does not match what's happening on stage, or the director has to resort to pantomime to tell most of the story. Updating is not the problem - internal logic is.

  • I agree that gianni schichhi is well translatable to other piriods but it´s not the case with many of the operas you see staged in different times. All barroque operas are pretty well transposable but Donizetti´s, for example, tend to lose a lot when they try to make them say things that are not there byt transposing lucia into a contemporary setting, to cite one i´ve seen.

  • Woo she looks like she is in pain...

  • Amen

  • the soprano is good, the tenor is ugly....

  • not yet, trying to work on that. I have audio posted online, but not on youtube.
