Just had to say I can completely relate to what you went through. I was friends with this guy who kept trying to buy me things when we weren't even dating (like you, I like buying my own stuff anyway) and I kept getting the feeling it was so I would "owe" him something.

Also, he tried to control who I hung out with, stalked me and told everyone we were dating and that we were "in love."

We hadn't even been on one freakin' date.

Glad you got out when you did.

soo i totally agree with not trying to buy love. my ex didn't need a reason or excuse to buy me shit. He would surprise me with something i was itching to get but chose not to for many reason. his only motive for doing this was to see me smile and be happy. Even if we got into a fight or something, never got me material objects as a way of waving the white flag.
