I acquired this yirdaki a couple of trips ago from Djalu as part compensation for 2 chartered planes I booked for the Gurruwiwis. Old man Lewukang Bukulatjpi's funeral was on at Elcho Island and Djalu and family needed to attend so I helped out.

It was the best yirdaki that Djalu had, and a scorcher of an instrument it is too. The words that come to mind when playing this beauty are classy and refined. There is a clarity and purity to the acoustics that soothes the soul... nothing harsh or discordant about this stick. There is also that feeling of being "pulled" into the yirdaki, a wonderful sensation that feels like the instrument is an extension of oneself.

There is everything to love about this yirdaki, from perfect back pressure, very easy overtone note, lovely clear voice with superb acoustic balance and depth... this is a tremendously good yirdaki, and if you don't know what all the fuss is about with Djalu's instruments, treat yourself to this wonder-stick and find out yourself!

Djalu shows that he still has that X factor. I doubt there is any Yolngu of Djalu's age anywhere in Arnhem Land who has the power and vitality of Mr Didgeridoo himself. In fact, I don't think there is anyone 10 years younger than Djalu who can play yirdaki the way he does.

Just to give Djalu's Rripangu Yirdaki Masterclass a plug... Djalu is running his own independent workshop next year in Arnhem Land and has asked me to promote the event for him and his family. Details can be found here:

Details will be finalised in the next month, so if you haven't booked your place, this is the time to do so as there are limited places left.

  • At :10, is that spit or have they rinsed the inside with water to get better sound?

  • That's water that was used to rinse the inside of the instrument for a better sound.

  • This clip spins me out... it was shot earlier this year, 2007, and as you can hear, Djalu still has it. Whatever Djalu is taking, I want some of it too!!!!!

  • Good to see Djalu again. He looks & sounds great, maybe even younger?....haven't seen him since Joshua Tree 2003.

  • Djalu has his ups and downs depending on his stress level and his blood pressure, but at the moment is he looking well and in good health indeed.

  • its impossible to play without gettin any spit in the didge. i always end up with a puddle after about 10 mins.

as long as the wood's properly treated and u stand the didge upright for a while after playin to let any excess run out it should be fine.

  • muten roshi

  • I reckon it is spit

  • That is not water.... that is... xD

  • aight

  • *grow

  • down there didjes gown on trees ;) easy to find new one

  • But spitting water into the instrument. Will that shorten the life of the instrument?
