Through a variety of hands-on exercises and training sessions, participants learn the operation of Panavision, Arriflex, and other common 35mm cameras. Participants learn to "build" these cameras, load the magazines, and thread cameras. Cinematography issues, such as the nature of emulsions, exposure of the camera original, the effect of filters, the aesthetics of composition, and set protocol, also are examined. Students shoot 35mm footage in camera tests to better demonstrate essential concepts, such as camera ramping, shutter angle, high-speed imaging, and various situations where exposure needs to be calculated.
I took this workshop, a few times very basic concepts like coverage were covered which seemed a little out of place since it didn't apply specifically to 35mm cameras (the concept applies to any format a movie is shot on) but overall a good class focusing on building a different 35mm camera package each week and shooting a roll of film with that camera. We covered: Arri IIC, III, 435, 535 and they went to Panavision. Charly is a great instructor.
