This is the first step-by-step tutorial video that I have made on how to teach your dog to scratch your back.

1. Put a treat/a few treats under a container. Make sure your dog sees the treat/treats and use your dog's favourite treats in order to get the best results.

2.Be patient and wait for your dog to scratch the container. Click and treat immediately after your dog scratches the container.

3.Wait for your dog to scratch the container a few times before you click and treat.

4. Add in a verbal cue and a hand signal just before your dog is going to scratch the container to cue him/her. Click and treat immediately when your dog follows your cue.

5. Use a piece of paper instead of a container. Repeat steps 1-4 if necessary.

6.Place the piece of paper on your back and ask your dog to scratch it. Click and treat immediately after your dog scratches the paper on your back.

7.Finally, cue your dog to scratch your back without using the paper. Click and treat immediately after he/she does it.

Tips:
- Go through every step slowly to ensure a stable foundation before going to the next step.
- Be generous with your rewards.
- If you have a big dog, you can ask your dog to scratch your back when you are standing.
- Be patient when you go through steps 6 and 7 as some dogs don't quite like to do tricks without facing you.

Caution:
- Make sure that you trim and file your dog's nails and the nails are round and smooth before you ask him/her to scratch your back to prevent yourself from being injured by your dog's nails.

If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message and I will try my best to help you. Please comment as I would love to read your comments.Lastly, I wish you success in teaching your dog this trick and hope both of you had an enjoyable time learning this trick.

  • @amanda20085fantage omg mine too!!!! Shes a chihuahua mic and shes too energetic and jittery!

  • @kelseymullenix You can try taking your dog for a jog until she is tired before you try it again. :) Hope it helps! :)

  • my dog wont just stand there and watch me..

  • @amanda20085onfantage You mean your dog is too active, running around and can't stand still? If that is the case, you may want to take your dog for a jog until your dog is tired before you try it again.

  • Very cute trick! It took a long time to learn this trick but finally my pooch is scratching my back. Thank you for your tutorial :-D

  • @LocoChan1432 You're welcome! Glad that your dog has successsfully learnt to scratch your back. Sometimes, it is really tough and takes a lot of patience to teach a dog a trick. I taught my dog to cross her paw and she finally knows how to do it after teaching her for a year! The fastest way to training a dog a trick is to have fun and make a big fuss over the dog for every step closer to the goal. :)

  • @newbear95 I know! I just love this dog training community :)

  • @dodgerbuddy7 Thanks! Glad you enjoyed watching the video. :)

  • @weiwei1105 Wait for him as he tries to figure out how to get the treat. When he got the treat successfully, praise him enthusiastically. Try playing this game at different places before placing a treat under the container and let him figure out how to get it using the same method. As he is used to using his paws to get the treats, he will most likely scratch the container. Thanks for trying out this trick with your dog. I will look forward to your updates on how your dog is progressing. :)
