Five graduate architecture students from Harvard University (known as "project Khayelitsha" or pK) and a law student from USC recently arrived in Cape Town to collaborate with Art Aids Art during the next 2 months (introductions below). I arrived yesterday to spend a week with them as the projects get underway.
Today in Khayelitsha we unveiled the architectural designs for eKhaya eKasi Community Center and invited contributions to the planning process. Response from the 75+ in attendance was overwhelmingly positive. In the next 24 hours lots of text, photos and video will be loaded onto the web by the dynamic volunteers who have immersed themselves in the complex task of bringing a structure to life -- before the bricks are laid, it must live in the minds and hearts of those who will use it. They have done a remarkable job of accomplishing this, as you will see from the documentation.
Ashley Heeren, Patrick Stowe Jones, Laura Shipman, Angie Thebaud & Gena Wirth are project Khayelitsha's Cape Town representatives.
