    Thank you for comment. Actually, the Edo period prepared for the rapid modernization during the Meiji period. Japan had the similar social system to the feudalism in western Europe. Thanks to the good ruling by the Tokugwwa shogunate, the literacy rate of Japanese was quite high by the end of the period.

  • Meiji era is really one of the most interesting era in Japan history.

    An unique case in the world, a successful and incredibly fast westernization. The scenery was quite a paradox: "modern" buildings, trains etc... just next to the majority ancestral japanese constructions, with most people still wearing japanese clothes and stuffs.

    I would have been glad to see that with my own eyes. Japan took 3 centuries in 10 or 20 years.
