Why can't the continue screen look more like this?
A camera shot of the top of the stage, from the defeated character's point of view. And as the countdown keeps on going, the character reaches out and you can see his/her hand on-camera.
If the player doesn't continue, the camera will tumble over to show the character, falling unconscious, with "GAME OVER" on the screen. If the player continues, the camera "stands up" and will focus on the character doing something cool (fist pump/quote/etc.)
Almost forgot, this is the continue theme(dynamic), when you lose against a team or the final boss in arcade. Still badass and would be a fitting last stand music.
