Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake has stressed that the relations between Sri Lanka and Pakistan have not been impaired.
The Prime Minister told parliament that the media had given a wrong impression about Sri Lanka's initiatives with regard to the suspension of commonwealth membership of Pakistan in Kampala. He said certain clarifications had to be made. Sri Lanka's stand was that Pakistan should be afforded more time to enter the democratic fold. The Sri Lanka foreign minister at the executive committee meeting also mentioned that Pakistan needed more time for this purpose. His stand was that no measures should be taken against Pakistan until then. Sri Lanka had no power to veto the suspension of Pakistan from the commonwealth. The Foreign Minister, with the knowledge of the President expressed his strong opposition. The Prime Minister said he wished to further mention that Sri Lanka expressed its opposition to the suspension not by vote but by expressing views.
