Why did Herbert have such an unusual view of the future? Granted, the year 10191 will obviously be very different from the 20th century, but a literally universal return to a feudalism straight from the Middle Ages?! That is, to say the least, a very unique view of the future.

@belianis maybe, but (i do remember the book far better than the movie) more interesting is his future view of psychological and biological processes. one term: "butlers djihad" for protecting mankind of becoming computerized "cripples" but working out physical and mental abilities. interesting when i read some books about the science of consciousness and subliminal processes. a book that came out 1998 (years after dune) was written by tor noerretranders and may explain my words.

@toomanyaccounts, I never read that in any of the books published before F.H.'s death. In fact, the original novel uses the Imperial calendar. Just look up the initials B.G. in the glossary. There are two definitions stated: Bene Gesserit, and Before Guild, which is the phrase used in the Imperial calendar for dates before the founding of the Spacing Guild.
