Chihiro, una niña caprichosa y consentida, se pone furiosa cuando sus padres le dicen que tienen que cambiar hogar. De camino a la nueva casa, llegan a un misterioso callejón sin salida donde se alza un gigantesco edificio rojo con un túnel en el centro. Entran en el túnel y al otro lado se encuentran un poblado fantasmal dónde les espera un magnífico banquete. Sin pensarlo, los padres de la niña se lanzan sobre la comida. Pero de repente, mientras ella les observa comer, sus padres se transforman en cerdos. Empieza el mágico e intrigante viaje de Chihiro a través de un mundo habitado por dioses antiguos y seres fantásticos. Un mundo dominado por la diabólica hechicera Yubaba, quien le explica que a los intrusos los transforman en animales para comérselos. Los que consiguen escapar también son condenados a morir si se demuestra su inutilidad. Así es que para postergar tan terrible destino, Chihiro deberá hacerse útil para sobrevivir en este peligroso mundo. Por suerte, conoce al enigmático Haku...
