"One item recovered from the debris field was a videotape recording made by the astronauts during the start of re-entry. The video recording lasts for 13 minutes and shows the flight crew astronauts conducting routine re-entry procedures and joking with each other, none of them giving any indication of a problem. The video shows the flight-deck crew putting on their gloves and passing the video camera around in order to take footage of plasma and flames visible outside the windows of the orbiter (a completely normal occurrence), and ends approximately four minutes prior to the start of the shuttle's disintegration. On normal flights, the recording would have continued through landing. According to the online introduction given by Scott Altman, the remainder of the tape was destroyed in the accident"

  • Kalpana Chawla had a beautiful voice. :( Reminds me of my mum. Rest in peace, Columbia crew. You served us bravely in space, and died doing something you believed in.

  • @neilandrewporter Ahhh.... it is very sad, but they say the crew immediatly passed out after depressurization, so they were unconcious before the flames started to burn the crew compartment

  • DO NOT GO TO THE LINK SHOWN AT THE END OF THIS VIDEO. WWWSPACETEGOORCOM ITS SPAM SURVEY BULLSH!T!

  • @RunningAfterAntelope yeah, i'd say they have the entire footage of the crew being cooked but they're hardly going to release it. RIP, brave people.

  • Just for perspective, I want to note that this tape (STS-ICOM) ends at 08:47:32 a.m. EST, and the first signs of a problem occurred 1 minute and 7 seconds later at 08:48:39 a.m (Entry Interface +270 seconds).

"08:48:39 a.m. - EI+270 - OEX: Strain gauge sensor V12G9921A, located inside left wing in line with RCC panel No. 9, begins to show a small but off-nominal increase. Sensor fails at EI+495 seconds. This is the first indication of anything amiss aboard Columbia."
