Chief Joseph made a promise to his dying father to never give up his peoples land where he would be buried. Joseph never signed a treaty giving this land to the US Government but they took it anyway. In an attempt to keep his people free he made a desperate run to Canada to join up with Sitting Bull. He came up 40 miles short. I wish he had made it.

  • This is the greatest Chief who ever lived and fought more soldiers than any other tribe. The only reason he did not make it was that he would not leave the old ones and sick that were left behind. He sent his family away and was never permitted to see them again. The government is still trying to destroy our lives. We are the only ethnic group that has to have a card stamped by the government to prove we are Indian. If you say you are they ask for the card to prove it.That happens even now.

  • @mamy101 I agree thats why I refuse the government card. I do not need them to tell me who I am. My Grandfather did that

  • Quick question.Ive always wondered where the Native americans learned English?

  • @puren00b768 Good question. For Hollywood it was used so the audience could understand. Most Native Americans knew very little english. Chief Joseph was raised a Christian though so he was well versed in english. Check out the mini series INTO THE WEST. Whatever tribe is on screen they speak only their Native tongue

  • Thank you for sharing this. Did you know about the Trail of Tears? The first time I heard about it was when I was a freshman in college in Nashville, TN. My roommate was a Native American and she told me all about it. I was speechless. The Native Americans deserve better than they got from our government. So much grief to bear...

  • Yes I had relatives that survived the Trail of Tears and some that hid out in the hills and would not go on it. What always bothers me is your statement that you didnt learn about it until college. NOT YOUR FAULT of course. Its the fault of the US Government and the teachers for not teaching its own people the truth. Why aren't the children learning this stuff in grade school? Because the government knows they where wrong and are ashamed.

  • there was a lot of snow on that day. this is wrong as regards the NO SNOW

  • @mamy101 Let us look for that day. Thank you.

  • @amixofeverything YOU are SO right! And yet most Americans are true dumb bells in realizing this--little education. And the rip offs continue with multi national corp's--mining, oil, etc. Well, AL natives know about this, right?

  • The lead actor was excellent---if you don't cry then you've got a glass eye or a stone heart. The Nez Perce have bounced back and are back on their land--Joseph would be proud of their resilience at everything a bully gov.'t threw at them--thievery, prison/boarding schools, crooked rez agents, etc etc. Here's to YOU Nez Perce people!!!

  • we watched this movie in my U.S history class, & there were several parts where i almost started crying, right there in class. We've been learning about the expansion west and all the horrible things tht the U.S gov did 2 the American Indian tribes. We learned about manifest destiny and how the white man used god as an excuse to take the land the land that they lived on for thousands of years. Im proud of my heritage, and where I come from, but this is one part tht i could never be proud of

  • @mamy101 I think the United States pretty much fucked over all the Native American tribes. Not so much up here in Alaska, but in the States definitely.

  • @lonewolf13scott This is one man I want to meet when I take my journey.I wish you the very best in your life.No matter what they do our spirits are always free.We choose ourselves what we let them do to us.One day in the near future the same God they claimed to use to destroy us will indeed punish them with an iron hand for their actions and restore back to us what was taken. All will be perfect. The Creator walks with us and he will take care of his First Nations Children. We will always be.AHO.

  • @lonewolf13scott Lakota is the predominant tribe in "Into The West"
