www.CustomCarpentry.co.uk are leading the way in contemporary bespoke fitted ECO furniture.
This is the second ECO project they have made. Tristan Titeux is Pioneering in his field of Eco fitted furniture and is very proud to be showcasing this first video of the first truly eco and contemporary fitted furniture unit.
It is made from strawboard which is a totally natural waste materials (more straw is burned or plowed back into the ground around the world than is used), it is truly sustainable as it can grow back every year, is fast growing much faster than trees and you can keep harvesting it forever. The board is also made with no formaldehyde so is much healthier for the environment and the inhabitants.
Paints and finishes used are from Auro who use totally natural materials, no petro chemicals, just what you can grow or easily find in nature without too much processing which consumes alot of energy and can turn healthy raw materials into unhealthy ones.
Ecos paint was also used as it is waterbased, VOC free because if is whiter and dries fast but not as natural as AURO paint.
Auro clear furniture oil was also tested on the strawboard as it is a natural product, shows off the natural grain of the straw and is easy to apply and requires little or no skill.
Auro and Ecos Varnish was tested to see how durable and water resistant we could make the strawboard and this finished worked really well and looked good.
Low powered LED lights are fitted to add to the design and bring some live to it in the evening, these 8 LED's use 0.4 watt each.
Small stainless steel handles where used both for their contemporary stylish look but also because as they are so small they contains only one 18th of the material that is used in a bar 38cm long bar handle that we often use, this unit uses 8 handles so at this rate that is a saving of 136 of these small stud handles over the usual bar handles.
The backs are made of wood which is compressed at high pressure and no glues to hold it together which makes it a super natural material as it can just be composted with your kitchen waste at the end of it's long life.
It isn't just the materials on this unit that make it green, it is it's clever design that is made to last for as long as possible:
The unit uses no glue and the screws are all discreet but exposed so that if the occupier of the house does not want this unit anymore then can take it apart as opposed to ripping it apart, so the pieces will be intact and ready to be turned into some other furniture or use.
But long long before we even get to that stage, the really clever part is that this unit is designed to have multiple use:
First it has been designed fit around a fish tank for the current occupier, but if the next occupier doesn't like fish or want a fish tank, then it can be taken out and a TV can be put in it's place with space, access holes and plug sockets already in the unit ready for your sky or dvd equipment for example to go below the TV behind doors so turning the unit into a media entertainment unit.
And if that is not what is required, there is also an option of turning it into an office, the tank can be replaced with a computer monitor, the strawboard central panel is removable and below it the doors open up to reveal a pull out keyboard shelf which is set at the correct height for typing, the access holes are there to route the cables for the computer and the cables can plug straight into the electrical sockets that are there too. The shelves of the unit are adjustable and so can be made to fit office files perfectly.
Every shelf in this unit is removable and adjustable, so if can easily be turned into the right kind of storage unit for your needs. There are currently two hanging rails in the deep section but these can easily be remove and used for storing large items such as ironing boards, brushes etc making a useful utility cupboard or new shelves can be made and added as the adjustable shelf holes are already drilled there in anticipation of it.
All materials, hinges, handles, drawer runners, hanging rails etc are of the highest quality ensure long life for the unit which ticks the box of sustainability again.
The unit is painted and can easily be repainted and refreshed again and again which extends the useful life of the fitted furniture.
The value of your home is also kept as we never have enough storage and future buyers will instantly see the value of such a versatile storage unit all this not forgetting the beautiful contemporary design that is classic and will last through the ages well int the future.
