Excuse the flute playing!, I have only had it for a week, and my Dad kindly gave it to me as an early Christmas present. I played as a kid, from about 10-14, so that was ermm.. 25 years ago, and I was rubbish then (I spent 80% of my time pretending I was playing during band rehearsals) As my Dad will testify, I could sit and noodle for hours, and still can, but when it came to the serious business of actually learning to play anything, forget it. I have improved a little on that front now.

Thanks to Daisy, my 10 year old, for the very impressive hand camerawork (very steady, and she has seen me watching enough boring saxophone videos, so she got the hang of the style very well ) She can play a mean 12 bar blues too now on the bass, so watch this space. I feel a crazy Daisy duo coming on.

All flute tips gratefully received, but please not I am not intending to take it up seriously, that is like a lifetime's work....

  • Happy Holidays from Phila. Thanks for your

outstanding playing and video quality. Just started this year with the alto at the age of 47. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Acquired a used selmer bundy standard model to start.

  • Cheers saxnewbe, my only advice is to become a complete mimic of someone good, pick a quality player, Bird, Desmond, Pepper, Mariano, Garrett etc and try and copy exactly their phrasing and tone. You will soon develop your own style, but like any language, copying is the best way to develop from scratch. Choose simple songs and phrases to start with, but listen really hard. Good luck and Happy New Year!

  • Excellent job, Matt

I don't need to use the &fmt=18 code because my player is set to automatically play the higher quality videos. The best part about this recording is that it illustrates how youtube has FINALLY enabled a way to upload with decent quality stereo sound. I was going to ask how you did it, but I found the youtube blog explaining it. Previously, the &fmt=18 code often had even worse compression noise than the mono version, but this seems to have been fixed now. Who'd have thunk it?

  • Cheers CJ, and thanks for all your very motivating comments through the year. I encourage everyone to listen to our stuff, especially your rendition of this tune. I am in awe of your musicianship...

  • Hey Crazydaisydoo, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, again becuase of you I'm now playing gigs and have just got one for New Years Eve thanks for the Inspiration. Did you go out and get yourself a Selmer Tenor? It looks like one in this video? I miss my Mark 6. Keep up the good work!!

  • Cheers mate, good to hear you are playing out. No Selmer, but a mighty fine Yani 901, and certainly up to the job....

  • I feel guilty for all the years I've left my Soprano and Tenor Saxes on the shelf. I used to pick them up once in a while... but ever since college (played in Jazz, Ska, and Wind Ensembles from High School till late college years) ... after getting married and having 3 daughters... I think it's time to dust off the saxes and build my chops again.

  • Love it!

  • great presentation and I love it. Years come n go, but this year I specially wish happiness, success, and peace for you and your family.

  • great job - it's really awesome .. *****

  • Cheers mate, this is... I love this! Thank you!

  • This is a great video! I love your soprano sax playing..very expressive =P

  • New Years at the diner on a cold and snowy New Year's Eve. The waiter looks as the clock turns slowly to midnight. He raises a bottle. "Cheer's to the world" he says with a slow grin. then goes back to reading the paper...

  • Man you are really great!!!

  • Beautiful sound on soprano! Not that nasty nasal sound like that Kenny whats-his-name.

    Keep up the good work.
