In 1971, the Tony Awards celebrated its 25th anniversary. A musical number from each show that won for BEST MUSICAL since 1946 was recreated that night. A truly wonderful show. Here is that night's excerpt from A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM with Zero Mostel singing 'COMEDY TONIGHT'

  • I was at this Tony ceremony and remember this so well. Zero was also one of the hosts and did hysterically funny stuff during the commercials and would always get offstage just before the show came back on the air. He also grabbed the photographer's camera during the party after the show and tried to take my picture. I had the night of my life!

  • I LOVE Zero Mostel - I think he was such a brilliant personality - mezmerizing.

  • @coteyankee1 he seemed so funny, i wish he was alive today, your so lucky to have meet him, do you remember any of his jokes he told.

  • Samuel Joel "Zero" Mostel was nothing less than a national treasure. "Forum" was also a major step up the ladder for its young composer/lyricist, one Stephen Sondheim.

I remember seeing these Tony awards on TV, and, as I understand it, this is the show long-timers still talk about fondly, 40 years later.

From that brief shot of the audience, you can tell it's New York in the early 70's: All the men look like Watergate conspiritors, all the women look like my ex-boss's wife.

  • I cannot imagine the joy of being in the presence of this giant of a man....my father introduced me to his craft at the age of 3 in 1962, I have watched everything I could find of him and by him all of my life....the world would be a far better place to have Zero in or midst in this, the worst era of American life. His talents are beyond measure and I will treasure him till the day I die. Thanks for this posting, I wish I could have been there.
