To learn even more about cued speech, check out this awesome mini-documentary!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plPw4H-ZsMg&feature=related

EDIT: Just realized that this vid is featured, and I do apologize for my mistakes in this! I basically taught myself how to cue, so the intricacies of the differences between sounds (i.e. the "aw" in "hold" vs. the "oh" in "joe") were sort of a mystery to me. I'm still learning every day how and why I say things certain ways! I'm also learning ASL and am generally interested in d/Deaf culture and community.

Host fam is still gone!

Post Valentinextravaganza, I made this vid to practice my cued speech skillzzz.

Please leave comments, including criticisms/critiques/questions! I definitely messed up a couple times, but it was already midnight. Perfection is for insomniacs; I'm going to BED!

"I Wanna Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles, covered by T.V. Carpio

Go see "Across the Universe", if you haven't seen it yet!

  • This is so cool, I really want to learn how to do it but I don`t know how to do it alone! Any suggestions?

  • @Kaoticcc You should totally try! There are a bunch of vids on here, but none that are very useful in terms of teaching yourself. If you message me, we could be Skype buddies, or else you can figure out things pretty easily with the cue charts (that's how I taught myself, mostly by cueing songs to myself in the metro):

go to cuedspeech(dot)org and check out the "cue charts". Good luck, and we should be friends!

  • i think cued speech is so odd. I am studying to become a ASL sign interpreter now and when our professor showed us videos on cued speech i though it was so queer. Is it difficult?

  • @gettingthrough Once you get the hang of it, it's not at all difficult! The idea is that it's a phonetic system, not a language, so that once you understand the handshapes and movements for the sounds, you can do it.

For me, it took a while to become accustomed to representing the *sounds* and not the spellings of words (for example, cueing the word "use" as "yUz" is hard when you're used to just fingerspelling "u-s-e"!). Cueing is also a neat way to get a visual representation of one's accent!

  • Mad skills, you haz dem.

  • You are great.

  • oh my. she is cute :)

  • Oh my gosh Jamie! This is terrific! I found this on Shanna's facebook, haha... if you're wondering how I got here. :-P Hope you're enjoying France!

  • Thanks buddy! Can't wait to see what you do with your stylophone!

  • Haha I know you like it when I jump around.

And yeah, cued speech is really damn cool and not that hard. The different hand symbols represent the consonant sounds, and the different placements/movements around the face represent the vowel sounds.

I kind of taught myself after a friend taught me what it was all about. I usually cue songs to myself on the metro to practice. =P
