Donkey Kong by Nintendo playing on the Atari 600XL vintage 8 bit home computer. Retro gaming.

This is not a review, walkthrough, playthrough, or demonstration of my playing ability.
It's simply a quick demonstration of the game so that anyone not familiar with these old games can see what it looks like.
It's also here so that I can embed it, along with most of the games in my collection, on my website (see link above).

Any opinions or comments I make regarding these games should largely be taken with a pinch of salt.
They are usually based on my first impressions after a very brief play.

  • I have one of these computers, and this game. I do not however like that on this game, you play 2 levels, restart, then play 3 levels. whats going on with this?! And can I ask, do atari 2600 games work on the 600xl? Thanks, and great video!

  • @theheadshot45 I don't know anything about the levels order on this game, coz unfortunately, I'm so bad at it, I haven't got far enough to find out... lol.

    The 600XL doesn't play 2600 games.

  • Does the 600xl also play other carts from the Atari 8 bit computer series?

  • As far as I can tell, it will play any cartridge that's compatible with the 400, 800, 800XL, 65XE and 130XE.

    It's limited memory means it won't play all tape based games.

  • I didn't know you could get that much out of an atari, may just have to try and find that one.

  • The Atari 8 bit computers are really quite good, when compared to the 2600 VCS. The hardware inside them is largely the same as that in the 5200.

  • @ClassicTVMan1981X thanks!

    The 400 and 800, which were the first of the Atari 8-bit line dating from 1979, had a separate cartridge for BASIC. With the 1982-83 introduction of the 1200XL (not well received) and then the 600XL (this) and 800XL, the BASIC ROM was built into the machine.

    The order presented here is the same as the arcade (ours, not the Japanese) version. The Japanese version is presented with all four boards being played in sequence, whereas our version has this sequence:

    L1 = girders, rivets

    L2 = girders, elevators, rivets

    L3 = girders, pie factory, elevators, rivets

    L4 = girders, pie factory, girders, elevators, rivets

    L5+ = girders, pie factory, girders, elevators, girders, rivets

  • Best home version of Kong from that time period. Great video Steve :)

  • Yeah! Donke Kong! I remember the music. Played it on Atari 65XE, long long time ago. Fantastic!

  • The Atari 7800 had a surprisingly accurate port of Donkey Kong and DK JR.

    Coleco's was fairly accurate too.

    Now as for the worst, Intellivision or 2600?

    At least the 2600 version is playable and fun.

  • This is definately the best version of Donkey Kong for the home, including the NES version. Maybe we'll get the arcade version on the Wii Virtual Arcade; that would be the only way this version could be beat, unless you count the first 4 levels in the Game Boy Donkey Kong from 1994.
