Therapeutic Horseback Riding uses horses to help people with disabilities improve fine and gross motor control, communication, self-esteem. We also work on planning and improving impulse control. I work with people with cognitive, physical and nuerological impairments as well as deaf people. Our riders have a variety of challenges; mental retardation, cerbral palsy, autism as well as other issues. I started the program in Ramah 4 years ago, I now have a non-profit status and am starting to seve people from other areas and from the big Navajo Reservation ( Ramah is a satelite or small reservation, geographically seperate from the main res.)Horses, rodeo and ranching are still important parts of life here; the riding program helps riders and the community to see people with disabilities doing what other people in the community do.
