A News of the World report claimed it secretly filmed the Scottish player Higgins agreeing to take a £261,000 bribe.

And snooker's governing body has suspended the world number one pending an investigation into the allegations.

The video reportedly shows Higgins and his manager, Pat Mooney, meeting with an undercover reporter in the Ukrainian capital Kiev, and agreeing to alter the outcome of frames in return for money.

The Sunday newspaper also alleges that Higgins inquired at the meeting about the best ways to conceal the 300,000 euros to be received for losing frames in four separate matches later this year.

  • I agree with others, he looks quite relaxed, not just playing along imo. I think the 6 months ban was taking the piss, should've been years.

  • Even now this footage shocks me.How on earth he,s still playing the game is beyond belief and clearly sends out the wrong signals to up and coming young players about this great game.It would be awful if he won the world championship but clearly shows cheats always prosper no matter what punishment that is given out.SHAME ON YOU JOHN HIGGINS.

  • Higgins should resign for the decency of mankind, anyway, I don't think this is one off, John most likely has done it before and might even do it again. He seems like such a down to earth and honourable man, but sometimes appearances can be deceiving.

  • Feared for his life my arse! Haggling for more cash - yeah, clearly bricking it. Should have handed him the same punishment which Hann received.

  • WPBSA rule 2.8 states: "a member shall not directly or indirectly solicit, attempt to solicit or accept any payment or any form of remuneration of benefit in exchange for influencing the outcome of any game of snooker or billiards."

Higgins was cleared as the panel accepted his claim that he had only agreed to their offer because he feared for his life. Maybe it's just me, but he doesn't look particularly fearful here.

  • I have new found respect for cricket, at least they punished the Pakistanis involved even though Kamran Akmal was let off. Its obvious that these "tribunals" have been set up to protect the sports money as opposed to the integrity of the sport.

If there really is zero tolerance, then Higgins should've been banned for life and Pakistan should've had 8 players banned for life. Zero Tolerance does not work in a world pre-occupied with wealth.

  • @pb509 yea not exactly cheating against his opponents, but destroying the integrity of the sport.

    so i agree with yea.

  • ALL HE WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR IS NOT 4 WORLD TITLES BUT A FAT BALD SCOTTISH CHEAT WHO TRIED TO GET A £300,000 BUNG..

    END OF STORY

  • That's it John, you were scared. So scared infact you went all the way over to the Ukraine to meet these 'fixers' (who were actually reporters). And then John, when you got over there and met these people, you were so terrified you negotiated a price with them of 300K (pushing up from 200 K)! John you are a matchfixing prick who has almost defiently done this sort of thing before and you should be stripped of all your titles and your MBE. In short John you are a stain on snooker. **** off.

  • Reading between the lines, it seems that the WPBSA decided that the implications of Higgins being found guilty were just too devastating for the sport, and that once they said they took his defence at face value the tribunal was more or less forced to do likewise.

  • how come the News of the world are not charged with trying to fix a match. Journalism or not, they tried to make a deal.
