back in the 1950's or early 60's Mt Ruapehu in New Zealand got it's first chairlift, opened by famous conqueror of Mt Everest, Ed Hillary.

  • Yes, that lift did finish at the top of the rockgarden.

  • I started my skiing career on this chairlift in 1956! It had been running for several years and there were rope tows in Happy Valley below the start of the lift which we used to gain our skiing legs. I remember that the "waterfall' chair lift was in place at that time too and it got hit with an ice storm that loaded dozens of chairs down with tons of ice and broke the main lift cable. Now my daughter has a ski lodge in Japan and my son is a ski instructor - I ski every chance I get even at 73!
