Smashing the Myths and Misconceptions About the RH Bill

by: leovlauzonSunday, March 13, 2011 at 11:01:00 AM

You are anti-Catholic. You want to destroy the church. You should be excommunicated. The devil incarnate in this modern world. These are but some of the hurtful statements hurled against those who stand by their conscience and defy the Roman Catholic position on sexual and reproductive health and rights such as the Reproductive Health Bill in the Philippines. RH Bill and RH advocates have been repeatedly slandered and castigated by an institution they hold dear most but cannot compromise with their stance on the controversial piece of legislation.

Abortion, promiscuity, and the usage of contraceptives that causes abortion, these are but some of the things that we repeatedly hear in the mouth of our priests in the pulpit. However, we asked, does RH Bill really promote these things and would the state condone it? This article does not have the intention to malign and insult the teachings of the church which I am part and will always be. My aim is to present the other side of the coin which is often neglected and for the readers to decide whether there is a ring of truth of the things that I will be tackling in this blog post.

On anti-Catholicism and destroying the church...Some people are using the charge of anti-Catholicism to try to silence the debate on reproductive health. How then can we stimulate an intellectual and scholarly discussion if we are zipping the mouth of the people who wants to tell what they know about RH by coercing them? And while that may be effective in some venues, let us not allow it to be used here. Certainly, anti-Catholic bigotry should never be tolerated nor should false charges of this bigotry be entertained.

Excommunication from the church...Martin Luther Part 2. Some high profiled advocates have not been allowed to receive the Holy Communion because of their outspoken position in favor for the RH Bill. Solons are also threatened to share the fate should they continue to press this important legislation. Excommunication is a drastic penalty that the church wisely uses only rarely. I always wonder why some people think excommunication is the way to deal difference. The church does not excommunicate people for what they think. It is better to be inclusive than to stamp out all disagreements.

RH Bill will legalize abortion...is it??? The answer is no. The RH Bill explicitly maintains abortion as a crime that is punishable by law under the provisions of the 1987 Philippine Constitution. It does, however, aims to ensure that women seeking care for post-abortion complications shall be treated and counseled in a humane, non-judgmental and compassionate manner. What's wrong with that folks? Having abortion, whether intentional or unintentional causes a traumatic experience on women most especially those who were victims of abuse and exploitation.

Promotion of contraceptives that causes abortion is legal under the RH Bill...timeout! That's foul! Contraceptives prevent unwanted pregnancies so that there would be no longer abortion. Now it is important to delineate contraception and abortion. Contraception prevents the union of sperm and the egg so that there would be no fertilization will occur. It does not, however, terminate the life that was already formed like that of abortion. All modern contraceptives are taken to prevent ovulation and inhibit fertilization to occur as explained earlier. There is no abortion if fertilization does not happen. All forms of contraceptives, if properly used, will deliver its maximum efficacy. Couples just need to choose the method that is suitable for them, depending on their health condition and desired family size.

Early sexual encounter and promiscuity among young people...the inconvenient truth! No no no no way! According to a study conducted by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), it was found out that young people who were taught about their sexuality become more cautious in matters concerning sex. A study by Grunseit and Kippax also shows that sex education, in fact, delays the start of sexual activity or coital debut and makes the young more conscious about protecting themselves once sexual activity begins.

Population control vs. population development...which is which? The bill seeks to achieve population development. Population control is coercive, or uses force to implement population policies against the people's will. This does not have a room for a liberal democratic country like the Philippines. On the other hand, population development aims to help couples achieve their desired family size while at the same time ensuring the health of the mother and child. It also deters teenage pregnancies and enables government to achieve a balanced population distribution.

  • @thumbsUPable24 that is a sad fact but we should not wallow in our misery. its about time that pinoys should stand together and demand a more effective way to plan their families. pinoys should stop being told what to do by the church & start deciding for themselves.

  • RH BILL.....isulong!!!!!

  • 82% of Pinoys want RH Bill to pass, SWS Survey.

ITALY, where the catholic church started, had their RH Bill approved in 1970.

Spain, France and Ireland all have their Universal RH approved decades ago.

Wag tayo TRYING HARD catholics. Daming GUTOM sa Pinas.

  • reality bites.
