I do prefer the real jazz sound, typified by understatement, rather than the over-statement style of Michael Brecker. (We're comparing the two tonight, so just some observations). Brecker was more the hyperventilated jazz-fusion-pop approach. Lovano goes more for sound and feeling, rather than the spitting out of multitudinous notes. Depends what you like. Some like it hot, some don't.

I've listened to Joe for a few years but it's only recently that I've come to fully appreciate his fluid phrasing, tone, and ability to keep every his solo so fresh

I know, and can hear, that Joe learned a lot from my dear old and best friend and mentor, the late, great and inimitable Billy Mitchell!!
They were close at one point!

Great jazz ensembles. Like best friends. I know where you're going. You know where I'm going. And we'll meet there. When we get there we'll have fun, and in what seems like so little time we move on. I know where you're going. You know where I'm going. And we'll meet again.
I listen to Jazz like this and I remember how dearly I love those that I love. Because only they go on the same journey, enjoy it with you, and yet painfully in something like body and soul live on different streams.
