Metallica's James Hetfield is a legend. Period. His driving and aggressive writing style didnt just reinvent music, it defined heavy metal. Hetfield's playing style is actually pretty straightforward, but none the less a monumental foundation for hard rock technique. His relentless assault of right handed chugging will be the primary focus point of this lesson.

  • I would have very much appreciated if you`d have approached the main riff of "Blackened". I find it equally relevant to Jame`s hetfield`s style and personally it`s giving me headaches

  • @manusuperdumnezeu I love that riff. It's brutal and probably one of the hardest riffs he wrote. I offer online services if you want to sit down for 30min and bang that riff out (tab included)

  • hi!

every singel word is just perfect, especially the down picking part :D

  • @DSKilroy Greetings and thank you!!!

  • Love that tone! Is that a pedal or something?

  • @skiny998 I don't remember which amp I used for this video. I meant I mentioned it in the comments.

  • @axeofcreation

how did you get that close to the ride the lightning tone?

  • just a little side note. im sure someone has mentioned this. but the ride the lightning riff you described was written by dave mustaine. look at wake up dead, he uses something almost exactly like it. just saying

  • @axeofcreation as much as I`d like that, I must admit that maybe I`m not yet prepared for . Of course, if more requests were made for it, I think you`d five it a shot right here on youtube if you can spare the time in the future

  • Got a question for you: Do you know why exactly Metallica play their live songs tuned a half step down? Is it to save James' voice a bit? Does that half tone down help that much?
