Several of Pittsburgh's light rail units running on the 42 line. First up is the on-street section of Broadway Avenue. Rush hour hadn't really begun yet, so I only shot 3 before moving down the line to Dormont Junction, where I caught one train in each direction. I circled back towards home and got one more shot of another 42C.

  • How much of this line is above ground?

  • @adelgado75 aside from a few long tunnels, probably a good 90% is above ground. it runs a big loop underground once it gets into the downtown area. the rest of the line is integrated pretty well into the suburbs.

  • Wow. I used to ride the T all the way from downtown in the subway all the way to SH Village like years ago when I was like 10 and 11. It'd be nice to do it again. But I have a question; do they use more 4 car trains now? Because when I always rode, the only used the 2 car trolley-type cars.

  • Yes, they double up the cars more often than not. The single pairs are usually seen on weekends or off peak hours, like late at night. Lots more people are riding the T nowadays with the high gas prices.

  • I love the trains but geesuz, where the hell are all the people?

  • This was a weekday afternoon, and a lot of these trolleys are inbound to the city. They'll be packed with people on the return trips outbound.

  • This might come as a shock, But many old 'Streetcar' networks did just this, for decades. (heck many modern streetcar networks in Europe / US still do!)

But there is a initial period of 'learning' drivers need to do. Its no worse than a large bus or 18 wheeler. Drivers just need to put down the cellphone, McDonalds coffee, morning news paper and stop trying to put on makeup, and you know actually drive their cars.

  • @MissyWegner -- Funny you comment on the less-than-chic design of the cars considering they were built by a German company.

  • i love this lightrail... have to visit it soon!

  • I'm in the Dormont area, but rarely ride the trolly.. nice video ;)

  • The only thing I dont like about the Pittsburgh T is you have to pay when you get on/ off.

So when your in a full train after a game you miss your damn stop trying to work your way up into the front of the car.

    Completely stupid system.

  • @MissyWegner

You should take a look at the Light Rail system in Baltimore Maryland.

  • I am somewhat amazed to see an actual operating light rail system in the US.

I very well know that there are a few, but generally I consider the US to be so car-crazy that it almost makes forget that they actually do have public transport, too. Unfortunately the car design isn't too chic... but among the best I've seen in the US so far... yikes

(I'm from Germany and public transport is generally more important here.)
