Here's a very simple way to get a Depth of Field (DOF) look using a simple Chroma Key* trick.

And you can do this with your fixed-focal length pocket HD camera!! Camera's like the Flip ultra HD,Kodak zi8 and other HD cameras work surprisingly well with chroma key!

Just a simple trick to get more use out of your pocket camera.

  • i have been trying to get a decent picture with my flip using a green screen and can't make it happen. there's too much spill! i'm dealing with a smaller room but can still get about 5 feet away from it. have the lighting pretty solid and have just decided maybe the camera isn't sharp enough to make it happen without spill. until i found your vid. any ideas? i know it's tough if you don't know my set up. but would a better camera help in a small space? in terms of spill?

  • @JayMaloneComedy The After Effects plugin Keylight v1.2 really helps make this chroma key work with a flip. But I know that software is expensive! So, I would recommend checking out my ‘fix a fixed focus camera’ video and and try a lens in front of your camera to get the sharpest focus you can. (dollar store) 1.25x lens should work. You may have to experiment with magnifications tho. If that doesn’t help, a zi8 does produce a much cleaner picture.. that may be your next option.

  • what editing software did you use?

  • @TheTNPfilms AfterEffects CS3 - Keylight 1.2 (for the chroma key effect) and Adobe Premiere CS3 Video Editing

  • Thanks great video but what do I need exactly to get great video using the chroma key ?

  • @realjuvelive I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but I'll say that good lighting for your key . Also matching the backgrounds that you use in your chroma key effect to your on screen with color and lighting will help it look more real.

  • lighting?

  • Sweet. What is "chroma key?" I'll look it up. (Didn't go to film school, sorry.)

  • It's funny, I was thinking about doing this for my new online marketing video series, and now you've confirmed that it is viable. Thanks so much.
