Today, the House will consider a resolution congratulating imprisoned Chinese democracy advocate Liu Xiaobo on being awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize (H.Res. 1717).

Liu Xiaobo was one of the original signers of Charter 08, an online petition calling for new policies to improve human rights and democracy in China. A number signatories of Charter 08 have been harassed and intimidated by Chinese authorities. While in China last year, Speaker Pelosi hand delivered a letter calling for the release of Liu Xiaobo and certain individuals detained or imprisoned solely for exercising internationally-recognized rights guaranteed to them under Chinese law. The Speaker also continues to call for Liu Xiaobo's immediate and unconditional release and for the Chinese government to adhere to its own constitution and respect the rights of the Chinese people.

  • Nancy Pelosi is a zionist jew

  • How disingenuous. How revolting. By examining her behavior and actions, one can only conclude that Nancy Pelosi's ideology is the same as the Communist regime in China. The only difference is that she is ashamed of it. Such crocodile tears for Mr. Liu.

  • @ryutard Its funny the way how America look at the world! Its like how Paris Hilton perceives it! Everything most be in the color PINK! Anything else is inferior and wrong! And she will, by all means, turn everything into the color PINK! Any other color deserves no respect! What right or wrong is up for history to judge! But what I know is that China is heading in the right direction! There r still 3-4 million that needs running water in CHina! Lets HELP[ THEM FIRST B4 WE TALK POLITICS!

  • @ryutard I thought we went past that? Again, Its unfortunate that Liu is imprisoned! My heart goes out to him and his family under house arrest! But if you do the crime then you better do the time!! A comparable situation would be with Wikileaks. Its founder is imprison, his reputation is being ruined, the website block from most countries! Same hypocrisy?

  • @popoTb yes, i know, but to raise the main issue i've been wanting to seek clarification since this started: why should liu be imprisoned and his wife and people like them because they voiced out their opinions? and even if the local government is the one responsible for this, why is it that the president could not lift liu's sentence?

  • @ryutard OK its getting late! "i will be back" :)

  • @popoTb by party, i meant government, and i wasn't referring to your country in particular. i was just saying that i wish countries would work together, as equals, if you'd like to put it that way, and not like what america or other countries do, oppressing trade and things so that they could have all things for themselves. i'd like to see the day when everyone treats people as equals, like what true communism is. btw, i'm asian, too.

  • @ryutard Again the Central Gov't of CHina is for the good and well being of the ppl! Otherwise, the 1.4 billion ppl will over throw it in a blink of an eye! Injustice though is a problem in the local gov't of CHina! Again no gov;t can control 1.4 billion ppl and a country as vast as CHina! Local gov't r corrupted n out of control! Poverty is prominent mostly in the western parts of CHina! Thats y the central gov't in pushing development west ward, so ppl there can share the economic effects!

  • @popoTb i'm not saying it is, it's just that it seems china seeks to be this by all means necessary while many of its people are facing death because of injustice, poverty, etc...

  • @ryutard It not, "selfishly own by one party!" just like any big company there are politics within politics! The gov't of China is split into many smaller parties! And there is always a power struggle of different thoughts and ideas! Like Deng Xiaopeng! He had to overcome many hardcore communist members in gov't to implement open market, freedom and human rights policies!
