How To Instruction Video For Dipping Cats Who Have Ringworm

www.projectpurrBR.org

1. Itraconazole (oral medication) 5mg/lb per day x 28 days. Treat all cats in the household, not just those who show signs.
2. Sulfurated lime dip every 5 days for 3 weeks
3. Topical Cream on lesions-Over the Counter 2% Miconazole Cream (the kind for Vaginal Yeast Infections).
4. Decontaminate the environment with regular thorough vaccuuming and tossing the bag

You will also need to decontaminate your home. The spores of the ringworm are sort of like dust, so you'll need to clean like you are ridding your entire house of all of the dust - thoroughly vaccuum every nook and cranny, top and undersides of chairs, cushions, mattresses, drapes, inside of shoes, clothing, sheets. Throw away the vacuum cleaner bag afterward. If you don't have the throw away type, consider borrowing a vacuum cleaner from someone who does. Wash their bedding, your sheets, anywhere they sleep in bleach and cold water.

Humans concerned with catching infection can bathe in 2% ketaconazole shampoo, available over the counter at any drug store. Just use instead of soap, and instead of your regular shampoo.

  • What people are told to do at home with lime dips may differ from what we do at the vet hospital (I work at one). However, you're supposted to put eye ointment in their eyes BEFORE starting the dip, to protect them. You also must get more of their face. I squeeze out the sponge and carefully go over the forehead, cheeks, chin, and a little bit in the opening of the ears. You aren't supposed to dry them either (naturally dry) and at the hosp. we use e-collars so they can't lick themselves.

  • Shouldn;t you put the solution on the head too?

  • Shouldn;t we be wearing GLOVES when we do this???

  • How do you treat any rooms that the cats/kittens may have been put into for the duration of the time (weeks) that they were undergoing tratment???
