It sounds pretty bad when they say 4 years. I was so shocked when the judge said 4 years i started laughing in court. But the reality is that no one actually does the full time. Every big holiday in the Muslim calendar all the possession and use cases get pardoned and everyone is deported. Most people like me, will do a max of half a year.

4 years for carrying marijuana is pretty absurd, especially in Dubai. I mean the law there is schizophrenic!!!. Prostitutes wandering around the city, but the law incriminate prostitution. Alcohol is allowed by the law, but not for citizens. My point is the laws there are joke. If your country have a good embassy in there, you can get away with even 10 kg of Heroine. Tourism there is the number one income for the city, so the reputation there is very important.

But the officers at the jail had been asking suspicious questions as to my whereabouts and had not handed over my passport.

Just to warn anyone living in the UAE, the laws here are shit, 1 year for pills, 4 years for anything else. The real jail time does not exceed 3-12 months but it can last 3 years if you do not get the pardon that comes twice a year. If you are not a local of the country you will get deported after you leave the jail. If you are a national you get 2 years of testing.
