The memorial to the first black firefighter in Springfield Mass. is unveiled by members of Corbin's family during a dedication ceremony on October 8, 2009. The memorial was built, using private funds, outside the Mason Square Fire Station. Corbin joined the Springfield Fire Dept. in 1969 and was a firefighter for 32 years. He died in 2008 at the age of 62. During the dedication ceremony, speakers praised Corbin as a " trailblazer". His family said Corbin had wanted to be a fireman since he was a child.
