The great Alberta Hunter, who had a comeback at age 83, singing "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," written originally by Jimmie Cox for Bessie Smith. Alberta had written one of Bessie's great blues songs, "Downhearted Blues." From the out-of-print VHS video "Alberta Hunter: Jazz at the Smithsonian."

This is a master performance by a real Artist. She SINGS, she means, she feels, she expresses, she knows what she's saying, what she's talking about. That's all what's about the Art of performing a Song. Splendid, fascinating, Great. Viva Alberta Hunter!

Blows Clapton's tepid version last night (121212) absolutely out of the water.

A great performance of a bluesy vaudeville favorite. The lyric reads as true in today's hard times as it did back in the twenties and on into the great depression.
