Tony Salmons, maverick AND renegade comic artist, pays a visit to my home. He is working on a big, secret project. Tony is hugely talented and, despite having worked for the majors, he prefers smaller venues. Tony is a student of the artform, conversant with any decade's leading workers and lesser lights.
I met Tony at Marvel Comics in the mid-80s and got him involved in Marvel's The New Universe. He briefly worked on Nightmask. As a practitioner of the Steve Ditko style of 'bent reality' he fit the dream-state of the book, hand in glove. Alas, New U was both our undoings- but that is a story for another day.
This is some video of Tony inkng some of his own pencils. For you young comic enthusiasts out there, pencling is the guiding line that tells the story. Inks are done in a variey of ways nowadays, but used to be done with brush or steel pen and India Ink-- which made the pencils printable. The penciler is in a dialog with the inker. Only a few comic artists can or should ink themselves; the two abilities are usually better left to the specialist of the field. Tony is one who should.
The date is July 13, 2010.
Mr. Chief! Good to hear from you again. This looks like a great secret project he's got going. Please keep us posted insofar as you can.
