If you listen to the music of the Sir Douglas Quintet you will realize that he had the whole Tex-Mex style before there was Tex-Mex music. It's where Tex-Mex music began. I listened to rock, country and mexican music all my life but there was no one who really put it together until the Sir Douglas Quintet brought to life.
@freezazoid No,there's definately Tex Mex in there! As I said; 'Stately Southern Gentlemen Tex Mex'. A combination that makes their unique sound. The chord changes and melodies have it (as does the pesonnel of the band-having at least one, perhaps two members of Mexican origin. That Tex Mex railway took influences both ways! Instrumentation comparisons exist too.The organ apes the accordion chugs of 'real' Tex Mex music. see 'Mendecino'.Surely you have heard that one.The melody is SO Spanishy.
@theonlyantony I wish every freaking time sir douglas quintet is mentioned people wouldn't have to make the tex-mex reference. I get that there was some latin heritage going on but they sound nothing like tex-mex it's a misleading and irrelevant reference.
I love this song..It is so intriguing, Doug could be referring to many things...He was truly creative in every style of his music...Wish he was still with us...

"You'll be King of what you survive"...I love the beautiful darkness and very real truth of that line. Genius! Thanks Doug!
