Zebra Grass Zebrinus

Such an easy, attractive ornamental grass, Zebrinus is the perfect addition to any sunny, moist or even wet soil. Its dark green leaves are beautifully banded in gold from base to tip, and from late summer through late winter, it is topped by gorgeous bloomspikes!
Forming a tight, neat clump, this grass stands 4 to 6 feet high (adding another 2 feet when the blooms arrive!) and about 4 to 6 wide, slowly spreading over time. Unlike most variegated plants, which are striped vertically along the leaf, Zebrinus is striped horizontally, giving you dabs of sunny gold all long these tall, slender stems! Very nice -- and quite different from every other plant in the garden!

Beginning in late summer, Zebrinus is topped by 24-inch plumes of pinkish-white, maturing to a golden-yellow hue. Filled with seeds, these blooms are the delight of the backyard birds, and cutflower lovers adore them for their long-lasting appeal in the vase, whether fresh or dried as everlastings. In mild and warm climates the plumes last right through winter, offering valuable texture and presence in the dormant garden.

Zebrinus loves moist, damp, boggy, or downright wet soils, thriving beside the creek or pond. Poor soil drainage is not an issue here! Very tolerant of heat and humidity, it's a leave-alone plant that will establish quickly and make itself right at home when the conditions are suitable. Landscaping has never been so easy!
