They took over the US governmental bureaucracy. Where have you been?

"But socialism in practice, as I've seen it, leads to kleptocracies."
so, you want to say, that compared to european countries the united states are NOT a kleptocracy? all your tax dollars are stolen to pay for WARS instead of healthcare/education. if your government would stop this nonsense and provide education and healthcare instead, you would even need less taxes in the end.
you are arguing for an ideology, using words like "kleptocracy", but your arguments are weak.
Human rights are a great idea. But when there is no food or shelter, there can be no "entitlement" to them.
If our economy is ruined, children and the old will starve on the streets - regardless of how lofty your sentiments are.
We've been lucky to be affluent - so far. That wealth isn't guaranteed. Destroy the source of it, and the result - as many socialist states of the world have found out - is abject misery and nation-wide destitution. That's reality.

when there is no food or shelter, it is already assumed that the local government has failed.
if people starve on the streets, government has failed, i think this isnt controversial but quite accepted.
so it looks as if those entitlements are already assumend to exist, and it becomes apparent in the consitutions of many nations where those entitlements are already being recognized as fundamentals. i think such an entitlement can and should be demanded from any government.

The worry nowadays is that a system similar to our ineffectual public school system will soon be imposed over the healthcare industry. Much of this "reform" is already in place (ie, Medicare).
Nothing in society is an entitlement, not even food and security. A society provides what it can afford - government needs to provide the best deal with the smallest impact on the economy. Instead, "socialism" gives license to the looting of property and business owners.

"Nothing in society is an entitlement, not even food and security."
so you dont think that human rights are a good idea.
i think people are more free when their human rights are being valued by the society they are living in. you obviously think that when children starve on the streets and dont get education, then society will be more free. that doesnt make sense, how can people be MORE free when they DONT have the choice to see a doctor or get education?

Nothing in the constitution or declaration of independence either promotes unchecked capitalism nor excludes socialism. Actually socialism and the concept of a democratic republic are completely compatible! Think about it.

there are political parties that call themselves democratic socialists active in many countries, and they are in power in democratic nations quite often. its one of the oldest and biggest and most important political movements in democratic politics on a global level. its strange that in the US you only seem to have christian conservatives, libertarians, and centrist democrats, what happened to all the socialists in the US?
