@takeoffthemask Yeah, Gerald apparently hails from a different playing style. Jazz guitar seems to be his specialty, although he did a fair job performing with TD. I much prefer Zlatko's work during the 90's, because I love the blazing Satriani style he brought in. It's too bad most fans are heavily critical of that very thing.
the guitarist is either not the original guitarist that played this song and doesnt have the same skill as the old one or his fingers went because he isn't just doing a different interpretation of this solo he isn't using the techniques in the first recording like legato runs which require dexterous fingers but just throwing in pentatonic solos and a wah pedal which are easier on the hands
@MrLizardisle If you would ask, wether I like Purple Haze very much, then the answer is: not really, even not TD's interpretation. I can listen and enjoy it, but it does not blow me out of my mind. But I won't judge. It's TD's tribute, it may be performed well or bad, it may be untypical TD sound or not: I just don't care. Edgar has a much broader "creativity spectrum" as most of the listeners (including me). THIS creativity is what I really like! Anyway, thx for the interesting discussion!
@MrLizardisle Probably we can agree that TD isn't a static experience. Honestly, I wouldn't listen to their work if they would play tune No. 1,508 in the same manner they did with tune No. 1 on the album ZEIT (like Kraftwerk still does until today for exmple, I like KW, but don't attend one of their 10,000th concert performing "We are the robots"). See what I mean? The only constant in TD's work is change. Maybe they sometimes change faster than I can follow. That's ok. I will keep up anyhow.
@MrLizardisle Once Edgar did an encore as a tribute to J.S.Bach (an even older musician as JH :-), which is not the type of music I usually hear or like. so I faded out this song when I listened to this particular live record. Nowadays I just create my own playlists, it is even simpler. I'm sure, the original J.S.Bach composition and probably Edgar's interpretation of it are masterpieces, but just not my musical taste. Ok, so be it! No problem. It's that easy for me. I just won't judge it. :-)
@MrLizardisle Agreed that their live performances just rocks. For example, they improvised FORCE MAJEURE on the "Rocking out the bats" concert in Berlin in 2009 as an encore (just yesterday I listened to the records again) and IMHO this latest version even tops the original, classic FM, which nevertheless is and remains one of my all-time favourites. So TD live is a very special experience which just cannot be compared to even their most awesome records.
@inettvradio Indeed ''zeit'' was far too ...static. But when i saw and heard the TG in London in 1974 improvising on ''phaedra'' and ''rubycon'' (actually i had no idea about these albums or the TG at the time), it was like nothing i heard or saw ever before. And to be honest even their next two albums STRATOSPHERE and RICOCHET by the original trio, did not sound to me as interesting as the two i mentioned.
@MrLizardisle No offense intented, but one has to accept (not like!) what TD is doing. Either you like it or not, but the "old times" with Franke/Baumann are gone and they will not come back in this form. It's the flow of time. If you don't like their latest work: no problem. As for me, I never did like "Zeit" for example, but I certainly would not blame the band for having done this (BTW: "Zeit" was an expirement to see wether it is possible to do an album of only one tune according to Edgar.)
@MrLizardisle I agree that Z/A/P/R were really great records, but I'm really sad of hearing "this is not the TD I used to know" for nearly 15 years now on every website, be it their homepage or the various video/music sites, where we, the fans, put a lot of efforts and work to make TD's music available to you, the fans. As for Purple Haze: it once was TD's tradition to give great musicians a tribute at the end of their concerts by performing work of J.Hendrix, Pink Floyd, the Beatles and so on.
