Street Fighter IV could have been an absolute disaster. Instead, it is a testament to the value of taking your time and understanding the platform. Capcom held on to Street Fighter IV for the iPhone until they were sure that the control scheme was precise enough to offer a true Street Fighter experience on a rig with no buttons or sticks. Thanks to that patience and fine-tuning, Street Fighter IV is fun, fast, and definitely worth your download dollars despite slight disappointments in regards to extras.

Street Fighter IV is based directly on the console-arcade edition which tore up the charts early last year. The revamped art style remains eye-popping twelve months later. Capcom has done an excellent job recreating it on a smaller scale, flattening out models from the console game and implementing great animation to make every single fighter in Street Fighter IV smoothly takes down rivals in fast-paced battles. Capcom even ported over Ultra Combos, massive special moves that result in big hits and lots of flash that fills the screen. While not as spectacular as the console edition, the iPhone's Ultras still look amazing for the smaller screen. But you aren't downloading Street Fighter IV just to gawk at slick visuals. You want to brawl with your favorite fighters. Fortunately, Capcom's virtual controls are more than capable. The virtual stick looks a hint large, but it is necessary for precise movement. Capcom simplified the button count, reducing the six buttons by two. Now, you just have punch, kick, special, and focus buttons. The streamlining is necessary due to screen real estate and general ease of use. But even though the controls are simplified, there is no loss in playability. You may need to take a little time to relearn a few moves, but you can still rip out your favorite attacks like Guile's scissor kick or Blanka's shocker. I'm a Blanka man myself and it only took me about five minutes to adjust to the new set-up.

Capcom also offers greatly simplified combos and specials. For example, while you can use a combination of charges, quarter-circles, and attacks to bust out an Ultra, you can also just press the stick in a specific direction and tap the Ultra meter to release the combo. Is that cheating? No, it's adapting -- and it's smart adaption, too. If Capcom had not taken steps to make Street Fighter IV accessible to all gamers, it would have been a failure. As a solo game, Street Fighter IV is a touch shallow, though. There are only eight fighters, all available from the get-go. There is nothing in here to unlock, which is something of a disappointment. Lone players can root around in the Dojo to master fighters before going into Tournament, but where is a survival mode? However, as a multiplayer game, Street Fighter IV succeeds. Capcom uses local Bluetooth for matches. The action does not hiccup, matches do not drop, and the reaction time difference between two devices is miniscule. It really is impressive. Ideally, I'd love to have online multiplayer over Wi-Fi or 3G, but it's just not doable right now.
