@BadLaunion Simply, he's actually switching to the harmonic minor scale and using it to build that particular chord that has the Ab (G#) note in it.
The song is in C/Am so instead of your C D E F G A B scale you sharp the 5th note and get C D E F G# A B. This new scale is called the harmonic minor scale and would be the A harmonic minor in this case.

Why I'm I using flatted notes if I'm playing in C- major? These notes outside of the C- major scale are used to form ALTERED CHORDS like #9#5 chords, #9b5 chords etc. You need to do a study on Altered Chords to get the gist of what I'm trying to put across to you.
